Prevent Child Injury Webinar: Button Battery Safety

Join Drs. Kris Jatana and Gary Smith from Nationwide Children's Hospital, US CPSC Consumer Ombudsman Jonathan Midgett, PhD, and Trista Hamsmith from Reese's Purpose for an hour-long webinar about button battery safety, hosted by Trainees for Child Injury Prevention and Prevent Child Injury. 
 
Button batteries are small and power many household devices. Their ingestion can lead to serious and sometimes fatal injuries. This webinar will provide insights into the risks, prevention strategies, and the latest regulatory efforts to protect children from button battery injuries.

Nominations Open for 40 Under 40 in Public Health

The de Beaumont Foundation is now accepting nominations for its 40 Under 40 in Public Health program, which recognizes and supports leaders under age 40 who are addressing public health challenges and making communities healthier. Nominations and self-nominations are open until June 13.

Event: Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Date: April 1-30, 2025 
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distractions—such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the navigation system—can significantly increase the risk of crashes, injuries, and fatalities. This year's theme is "Don't Drive Distracted. Webinar: Keeping Kids Safe: Advancing Pediatric Firearm Injury Prevention
Date/Time: April 3, 2025, 1PM ET
Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. The scope of the problem is well known among the nation’s children’s hospitals. Learn how pediatric health care professionals are working to keep kids safe through firearm injury prevention. Attendees will explore evidence-based strategies for preventing youth firearm injuries, with special focus on reducing firearm suicides among adolescents and counseling families on secure storage; the Children's Hospital Association’s new report on firearm safety prevention efforts; and CHA’s recently launched Agree to Agree campaign. Window Safety Week, the first full week in April, coincides with the arrival of spring, when people naturally want to open the windows and let in fresh air. The goal of this observance is twofold: for families to understand the role of windows in escaping a fire or other emergency and to learn how to safeguard against window falls. Event: National Public Health Week (NPHW)
Date: April 7-13, 2025 
Each April, APHA unites communities nationwide to celebrate NPHW, recognizing public health contributions and addressing key health issues. As the organizer for 30 years, APHA develops annual campaigns and resources to educate the public, policymakers, and practitioners on each year's theme. Event: World Health Day
Date: April 7, 2025 
World Health Day, celebrated annually on April 7, will kick off a year-long campaign on maternal and newborn health. The campaign, titled Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures, will urge governments and the health community to ramp up efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being. WHO and partners will also share useful information to support healthy pregnancies and births, and better postnatal health. More information here.

Event: National Youth Violence Prevention Week
Date: April 28-May 2, 2025 
Founded in 2001, National Youth Violence Prevention Week (NYVPW) is a time for youth to lead communities on effective strategies to prevent youth violence. The campaign is a week-long event with each day of the week corresponding to a specific challenge for communities.
